This series of short texts provides accessible accounts of a range of essential topics in chemistry and chemical engineering. Written with the needs of the student in mind, the Oxford Chemistry Primers offer just the right level of detail for undergraduate study, and will be invaluable as a source of material commonly presented in lecture courses yet not adequately covered in existing texts. All the basic principles and facts in a particular area are presented in a clear and straightforward style, to produce concise yet comprehensive accounts of topics covered in both core and specialist courses. This book for advanced undergraduates covers areas of mechanistic and physical organic chemistry in a non-mathematical way. The topics included are essential in any modern chemistry degree, yet are not included in standard organic chemistry textbooks for undergraduates. The book starts with a consideration of molecular vibrations and intermolecular interactions, and introduces the use of potential energy profiles and reaction maps to describe organic chemical transformations. The relationship between kinetics and organic reaction mechanisms is then explored with special emphasis on the interpretation of activation parameters. The relationship between molecular structure and chemical reactivity, i.e. correlation analysis, is then covered, followed by a chapter on catalysis of organic chemical reactions in solution by small molecules. The treatment of catalysis explores how the molecular structure of compounds determines their reactivity either as substrates or as catalysts. The final chapter is devoted to isotope effects in mechanistic organic chemistry, concentrating on deuterium kinetic isotope effects.

Chemical Structure and Reactivity: An Integrated … “Chemical Structure and Reactivity” is the book I wish I had as an undergraduate. Written by two Cambridge academics (including Wothers who also wrote Organic Chemistry with Clayden) the book covers essentially the entire first year of a general chemistry course (organic, inorganic and physical) along with some topics that might be covered in second year.
